  13. 1.  Installing the Microsoft Certified Professional Assessment Exams
  14. ------------------------------------------------------------- 
  15. To install the Assessment Exams on a hard disk using the 
  16. included Setup program:
  17.  
  18.     a.  Load Windows 3.1 or higher 
  19.         NOTE: Microsoft Windows 3.1 is required.
  20.  
  21.     b.  Insure that you can access the disk or drive 
  22.         containing the Microsoft Certified Professional
  23.         Assessment Exams program and exam files.
  24.  
  25.     c.  Run SETUP.EXE from Program Manager or File Manager.
  26.             SETUP.EXE will copy the necessary files to your 
  27.             disk and create a Program Manager group.
  28.  
  29.     d.  Once SETUP.EXE has completed, you may execute the 
  30.             assessment program by clicking on the Assessment 
  31.         Exams Program Item, or by running the LNCHTST.EXE 
  32.         program from the File Manager or Program Manager.

  34.         Do not directly execute the WTDP.EXE program.

  37. 2.  Using the Assessment Exams
  38. ------------------------------------------------------------
  39. To become a Microsoft Certified Professional you must pass a 
  40. series of standardized exams which reflect your knowledge 
  41. and skill in planning, implementing, and supporting 
  42. solutions with Microsoft products.  The Microsoft 
  43. Certified Professional Assessment Exams are designed to help you 
  44. evaluate your knowledge and skills prior to taking the 
  45. actual certification exams.  Version 1.4 of the Assessment 
  46. Exams contains 12 assessment exams:
  47.  
  48.     *  Microsoft Windows v3.1
  49.     *  Microsoft Windows for Workgroups v3.1
  50.     *  Microsoft Windows NT v3.1
  51.     *  Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server v3.1
  52.     *  Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Implementation
  53.     *  Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Administration 
  54.          for Microsoft Windows NT
  55.     *  Microsoft SQL Server v4.2 Database Administration
  56.          for OS/2
  57.     *  Microsoft Visual Basic for Windows v3.0 Application 
  58.          Development 
  59.     *  Microsoft Mail for PC Networks v3.2 - Enterprise
  60.     *  Networking with Microsoft Windows for Workgroups v3.11
  61.     *  Networking with Microsoft Windows v3.1
  62.     *  Microsoft Access Application Development

  64. These assessment exams will also give you practice answering 
  65. questions of a format similar to those on the actual exams.  
  66. Because these assessment exams cover many of the concepts 
  67. you are required to know for certification, the higher you 
  68. score on a specific assessment exam, the closer you may be 
  69. to passing the actual certification exam.  However, these 
  70. exams do not serve as actual certification exams, nor does 
  71. performance on these exams guarantee or directly correlate 
  72. to the success you may have on the actual certification 
  73. exams.

  75.     Setting Your Name
  76.     ------------------------------------------------------
  77.     To set your name on an exam, click the Options button 
  78.     on the Select a Test window.  This will bring up a 
  79.     dialog box that will allow you to enter your first and 
  80.     last name.  When you start an exam, your name will 
  81.     appear in the test introduction and on any score 
  82.     reports.

  84.     Starting An Exam
  85.     ------------------------------------------------------
  86.     To take an assessment exam, click on one of the exam 
  87.     titles in the Select a Test window.  Text describing 
  88.     the specific exam will appear in the Description 
  89.     window.  To start the exam, click the Start Test 
  90.     button.

  92.     There is no time limit on the assessment exams.  And, 
  93.     you may repeat the assessment exams as often as you 
  94.     wish.

  96.     On-line help is always available by clicking the Help 
  97.     button or pressing F1.  Note that only the options 
  98.     displayed on screen in the Microsoft Certification 
  99.     Assessment Exams version 2.0 are available.  You may 
  100.     see some options documented in Help which are not 
  101.     implemented in this version of the assessment exams.

  103.     Answering Questions
  104.     ------------------------------------------------------
  105.     Specific instructions are provided for answering each 
  106.     question.  Read the on-screen prompts before 
  107.     answering a question, to be sure that you understand 
  108.     what is expected.  
  109.  
  110.     If you answer a question incorrectly, you will be 
  111.     given feedback indicating the correct answer.  You 
  112.     will be allowed to review previous questions and to 
  113.     mark those you wish to review later, but you cannot 
  114.     change your answer to a question after proceeding to 
  115.     the next question.  (You may repeat the exam if you 
  116.     wish.)

  118.     Scoring
  119.     ------------------------------------------------------
  120.     After you end the exam, your score will be 
  121.     automatically displayed.  You can also check your 
  122.     scores on each exam using the Scores button in the 
  123.     Select a Test window.  A record is kept of all the 
  124.     scores for the exams you have taken.

  126.     The assessment exams are not scored as pass or fail.  
  127.     The score given for each assessment exam enables you 
  128.     to evaluate your knowledge and determine if additional 
  129.     study may be of benefit.

  132. 3.  Overview:  Microsoft Certified Professional program
  133. ------------------------------------------------------------
  134. The Microsoft Certified Professional program identifies 
  135. technical professionals who have the expertise required to 
  136. plan, implement and support solutions with Microsoft 
  137. products.  It helps individuals assess and promote their 
  138. skills, and provides a benchmark for organizations to use 
  139. when hiring technical staff, determining training needs, or 
  140. outsourcing technical services.

  142. The Microsoft Certified Professional program offers three 
  143. certifications:
  144.  
  145.     *  Microsoft Certified Product Specialists are highly 
  146.        skilled at installing and supporting a specific
  147.        Microsoft desktop product, and tuning and customizing
  148.        it to meet the needs of a user or organization.
  149.  
  150.     *  Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers can plan, 
  151.        implement and maintain information systems with 
  152.        Microsoft Windows NT and other Microsoft advanced 
  153.        systems and workgroup products.
  154.  
  155.     *  Microsoft Certified Trainers are qualified to teach 
  156.        specific Microsoft courses, having demonstrated 
  157.        their technical expertise along with their teaching 
  158.        skills.

  160.     *  Microsoft Certification for Developers Statement of Direction
  161.  
  162.        We've received many requests to expand our Microsoft 
  163.        Certified Professional program to include a certification 
  164.        for developers.  As a result, we have researched the needs
  165.        of our customers and partners in this area and explored 
  166.        approaches to ensure validity and reliability of our 
  167.        certification.  We plan to formally announce our certification
  168.        for developers in the third quarter of calendar year 1994.

  170.        Exam development for this certification is already in 
  171.        progress and we will be releasing individual exams as they
  172.        become available.  Although passing either of these exams
  173.        does not by itself qualify an individual for Microsoft
  174.        certification,  it does provide an opportunity to get an
  175.        early start on completing our developer certification
  176.        requirements.  Individuals will receive transcripts from
  177.        Microsoft stating the successful completion of these
  178.        certification exams.

  181. To become a Microsoft Certified Professional, you must pass 
  182. a series of exams that validate your technical proficiency 
  183. with Microsoft products and supporting technologies.  We 
  184. recommend Microsoft certification for all technical 
  185. professionals who plan, implement and support solutions with 
  186. Microsoft products.  This diverse group of professionals 
  187. includes system and network administrators, support 
  188. coordinators, systems engineers, sales support engineers, 
  189. consultants, and trainers.  As a Microsoft Certified 
  190. Professional you'll be recognized as a quality source of 
  191. technical information and support on Microsoft products, 
  192. have access to ongoing technical information from Microsoft, 
  193. and receive special invitations to Microsoft conferences and 
  194. events.
